Two years on, war continues to ravage Sudan. Destruction is immense, and ordinary people are suffering greatly. Employment possibilities have been wiped out, and UN aid shipments are blocked by the military. 25 million people are reported to be suffering severe food shortage.
For two years CASSS has led on survival support for the Church in Sudan, and through its network has been channelling relief funding right across the country. It is hardly a success story because the need is so great and what we can supply is so small in comparison. But what we are doing is significant. It has kept many pastors in place, and enabled church centres to be a source of aid to their community.
What the Church in Sudan is doing is a model used by many communities there. Their work, called Emergency Rooms, has been seen and praised even by big international aid agencies. But all these places of aid delivery are dependent on funding from friends abroad, local resources having been completely drained. We are the friends abroad that the Episcopal Church looks to in this time of crisis to keep their church centres open and relief supplies available.
Working with Archbishop Ezekiel and the Provincial office, we agreed a £300,000 survival budget for this year including a target for CASSS of £75,000. Please can you give to help fund that target?
Archbishop Ezekiel writes: “Despite the continued crisis and the suffering, we thank God for His faithfulness, believing that he will intervene at his own right time. We wish to express our thanks and gratitude to our friends and partners abroad and within Sudan for standing in solidarity with us, in their support, encouragement and prayer for all the Sudanese people in general and Christians in particular.”
