When war broke out in 2011 in Sudan’s South Kordofan and Blue Nile, the government was quick to declare areas controlled by the armed opposing groups no-go-areas for traders, aid workers and media. While hundreds of thousands fled for other parts of Sudan or into South Sudan and Ethiopia, more than a million people stayed behind.
